By:  ellis j. still

On Friday and Saturday October 22nd and 23rd, 2010, Literary enthusiasts will descend upon the City of Newark for the Bethany Baptist Church Book Club and Youth Council’s book symposium titled “Sharing Our History and Celebrating Our Stories” . The event is part of a larger celebration of the ten-year pastorial anniversary of Dr. M. William Howard and Ms. First Lady Barbara Howard of Bethany Baptist Church.

There are 21 workshop sessions in total, some of which include discussions such as the issues of the era of Langston Hughes as it relates to Literature, the importance of encouraging an interest in understanding our communities, assistance in the understanding the CALL of a writer, and a discussion about Frances E. W. Harper’s short story, “The Two Offers,” in the context of the 19th century women’s movement.

If you still are not convinced, here are five reasons to attend the symposium:

  1. You get to meet new people and create new friendships
  2. It is a positive influence to our community that furthers the cause of reading
  3. You get to witness and be involved in stimulating conversation
  4. You get to pay a visit to the City of Newark, NJ
  5. The symposium is FREE!!!

Other events as part of the anniversary celebration include a discussion on Jazz and a Jazz concert on October 16th, 2010, and on October 24, 2010, Cornell West will be the guest speaker.  The reception & dinner will follow at the historical 744 Broad Street in Newark, NJ.

Literacy is an important part of life. It provides for the necessary skills needed for any endeavor in that it develops the mind, is directly related to success and life aspirations, and is the choice of entertainment for many people. Reading is sometimes seen as a burden, but once you pick up a good book that matches your interest, you will see that reading is as fun and imaginative as you make it.

So, you have a great event in a great city where you can create great friendships sponsored by a great book club for a great cause… and it’s FREE.

Question:  So what is stopping you from attending?   :- )
